~ The Way of Shadows – Brent Weeks ~

Master’s Reader Note ~ 12/20

Summary : This is the worst plot I’ve ever encountered in a well-written book by an experienced author. The writing quality is good, but the reading experience based on the plot, the overpowered character experience, and conflicts is overall merely passable. The author increasingly incorporates more sexual content as the series progresses, making it unsuitable for family reading. The story generally starts adequately but deteriorates with subsequent volumes. I would not reread any scenes, as none were particularly noteworthy or satisfying.

Series Lenght : 3 Tomes

Narrative Pace and Story Density ~ 11/20

Approximately 30% of the third book and 25% of the second book were skipped due to irrelevant storylines of tertiary characters who only impact the main plot in the final 20 pages of the series. Reading about inconsequential characters who have no effect on the primary storyline significantly detracts from the overall experience. That aside, the conflicts are fine with some that could be resolved with a single conversation… and their resolution are not very satisfying either.

Overpowered Rating ~ 11/20

The protagonist becomes stronger throughout the series, but you should not expect an overpowered character. He frequently loses for avoidable reasons linked to the plot, does not demonstrate his power effectively, and there is not a single satisfying power demonstration scene in the entire series. There is also a lack of humor. This story does not truly belong in the overpowered category. Furthermore, even at his peak, the protagonist can still be commanded like a dog. This was not an enjoyable overpowered protagonist reading experience.

Quality of the plot ~ 10/20

The plot is adequate initially, but an increasing number of plot holes emerge as the story progresses. These plot holes undermine the foundation of the narrative, and there is excessive plot armor that heavily strains credibility. There are too many dramatic twists that fail to contribute meaningfully to the story. If you are not bothered by these issues, I would not be surprised if you appreciate the story tho. Additionally, we follow certain characters throughout the entire series, only for them to be minimally relevant (about 5%) to the primary plot, which is not an enjoyable experience. As this occurs more frequently, I skipped approximately 25% of the second book without any impact on understanding the main plot.

Strenght of the World-Building ~ 14/20

The world-building is good and realistic, but the author employs an excessive number of overcomplicated terms, seemingly for self-aggrandizement. There are also too many similar terms, which can lead to confusion.
